Optimal Ranges Questionnaire
Intuitive Pitching · For the coach · Part 3

Your optimal ranges

Every athlete gets two report cards graded A to F: a body card from 4D Motion (how she throws it) and a ball card from PitchLogic (what the pitch does). For each number, confirm the optimal range (that's an A), then say what counts as Good, Fair and Needs work. At the end, tell me how each card adds up to its grade, and how the two cards combine into one overall pitching grade. The last part asks how you handle athletes' health data (HIPAA, consent, and what format it comes in). About 20 minutes. Your answers are saved in this browser as you go, so you can stop and come back. When you're done, press Finish and send them to me.

Grading by age

Every pitcher is graded against her own age group. You pick it on her report card, or the app works it out from her graduation year. A 12U shouldn't need a college number to get a good grade, so the app is easier on younger pitchers. Tell me if it's fair.

Which age groups do you coach?
Here's one example. Is this fair?

Your optimal hip drive speed is 5.2 to 5.8. Say a pitcher's hip drive speed is 4.6, a bit under that. This is the grade the app would give her at each age today. If you'd grade it differently, pick your grade.

Body report card: 4D Motion

How she throws it. This card grades Drive, Timing, Kinematic Sequence, Whip and Posture. Your optimal ranges are filled in from your notes. Fix any that are off, then add what counts as Good, Fair and Needs work. Anything worse than Needs work is an F. Write it however is natural: "5.2 to 5.8", "over 3,000", "under 4.3".

DriveHip sensor / drive speed
Graded now

Coach's note: 5.2–5.8 efficient; example athlete 4.28 peak linear speed. Units as 4D exports them.

TimingHumerus position at foot plant
Not graded yet

Not mapped: 4D's "Upper Arm angle - Foot Plant" reads about 60° on real files, a different zero point. Coach to confirm.

Kinematic SequencePelvis angle at peak rotation
Graded now

85°–90° marked too much.

Kinematic SequenceChest angle (pelvis ~70°)
Not graded yet

Not mapped: 4D's "Chest - Peak Opening Rotation" reads −16° to −29° on real files, a different zero point.

Kinematic SequenceChest rotational-speed gain over pelvis
Graded now

Coach wrote ~30%. 4D exports this as a fraction (chest ÷ pelvis peak speed − 1), so it is shown × 100.

Kinematic SequenceHip/chest separation at peak (~9 o'clock)
Not graded yet

Not mapped: 4D's "Pelvis/Chest - Peak Closing Separation" reads 80°–87° on real files.

Kinematic SequenceSeparation at ball release (chest behind hips)
Not graded yet

Not mapped: 4D's "Pelvis/Chest Separation - Release" reads about −80° on real files.

WhipPeak rotational arm/wrist speed
Graded now

3,300°/s = very elite. 2,400°/s marked efficient middle-pack for a young pitcher.

WhipPeak lower-arm deceleration rate
Graded now

Coach wrote 300,000°/s² as the target/reference value.

WhipElbow bend when upper arm compresses at rib
Not graded yet

8°–12° marked not enough. Not mapped: 4D's "Elbow - Bend" reads about −100° on real files.

PostureSpine angle / landing tilt at foot contact
Not graded yet

Not mapped: 4D has chest side bend and forward bend at foot plant; coach to pick which one this is.

PostureBack tilt at ball release
Not graded yet

12°–13° backward noted as undesirable. Not mapped: coach to confirm the 4D column and its sign.

PostureSpine angle when arm is at top of circle
Not graded yet

−18° to −20° best; general range 12°–24°. Not in 4D's metrics export (no top-of-circle event).

PostureSpine extension at ball release
Not graded yet

Example −14° → +17°; +17° marked too much. Not in 4D's metrics export.

Ball report card: PitchLogic

What the pitch does. This card grades Speed, Spin rate and Spin per mph, pitch by pitch. You haven't given ranges for these yet, so the app uses published softball charts for now (shown in grey). Type your own optimal range to replace them, or leave a row blank to keep the chart.

How each card adds up

Every athlete gets two report cards, each with its own overall grade: the body card (4D Motion) and the ball card (PitchLogic). Right now each card's grade is a plain average of its areas, each area is the average of its numbers, and the overall pitching grade averages the two cards. Tell me how you'd weigh them.

Body card: how much should each area count toward the body grade?

Leave blank to keep them equal. They should add up to 100.

Total: blank = equal weights

Ball card: how much should each area count toward the ball grade?

Leave blank to keep them equal. They should add up to 100.

Total: blank = equal weights

Ball card: each pitch gets its own grade. How should her pitches count toward the ball grade?
Ball card: should the session habits (changeup gap, speed consistency, speed fade, tagging) count toward the ball grade?
If one area is really weak, should it pull its card's grade down more than the average does?

The overall pitching grade combines both cards

The report card now also shows one overall pitching grade at the top. For now the app counts body and ball equally (50/50), and it only shows the grade when both cards are graded.

How much should each card count toward the overall pitching grade?

Total: 100%

Should that split change with age?
If she only has one card graded (e.g. no 4D capture yet), what should the overall pitching grade do?
If one card is much weaker, should it hold the overall pitching grade down?
Which grades should the athlete see?
Where should each letter start? (out of 100, same on both cards)

Filled in with what the app uses now. Plus and minus sit inside each letter (A− from 90, A from 93, A+ from 97).

Health data

The app has places for health, blood work, neurological and movement assessments. Health information has extra rules (HIPAA, and parent consent for athletes under 18), so I need to know how you handle it now before real athlete data goes in. Answer what you know. "Not sure" is a fine answer, and we'll confirm the HIPAA side with a professional before launch.

HIPAA and consent

Do you or Rise Performance bill health insurance for any service?
Does anyone licensed collect or review this health data?
Where does the health data come from?
Do athletes (or parents, for under-18s) sign a consent or release for their health data today?
Has Rise Performance ever signed a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with a software company?

Who sees it

Who should be able to see an athlete's health data in the app?
How long should the app keep it?

What format it's in

This decides whether the app stores it as typed-in numbers, plain text notes, or the original file (PDF or photo).

Health (clearance, pain, injury history): what format does it come to you in?
Blood work (lab values): what format does it come to you in?
Neurological assessment (balance, reaction, vision, vestibular): what format does it come to you in?
Movement assessment (range of motion, mobility): what format does it come to you in?
How would you like to keep it in the app?
Can you send one example of each (with names and birthdays removed) so I can match the format?
